Gaddagh Bridge Gone

The Gaddagh Bridge at Killoughane Beaufort long a serious obstruction to spawning salmon in certain water conditions was washed away in the recent floods.

And still salmon cannot negotiate the fallen bridge, the picture shows a dead salmon which died at the bridge while trying to get upriver last week, .

Tom O’Reilly retired Chairman of Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers' Association got on to local political representatives to bring the problem to the attention of those responsible.

Members of Laune Anglers are rightfully concerned that this occurs as a problem almost annually.

This is the ideal opportunity to rebuild the bridge and to consider the needs of the spawning salmon in the design. Lessons should be learned from recent difficulties with weirs on the Feale and the Nore when thousands of salmon could not get past Lacken Weir near Kilkenny city because of the design of the fish pass.
